Edit Categories and WYSIWYG TinyMCE Added

CataBlog 1.6 has been released today, and with it comes two new requested features and an assortment of bug fixes. CataBlog now sports a fancy WYSIWYG editor for your catalog item's description and also lets you modify your categories without having to delete and recreate new categories. For a complete list of changes please read the changelog.

The new WYSIWYG editor should be familiar to all WordPress users, as it is the same editor you use for posts and pages. If you still want to write your code in HTML, simply use the tabs in the upper right corner of the editor to switch views. Even though we upgraded the editor, you still have all the freedom you had from before, including inserting flash embeds, Javascript and Shortcodes into your catalog item descriptions. Just make sure to enable the WordPress filters in the CataBlog Option's Description Tab.

The new category editor lets you modify a category's name and slug, while still keeping all your library items in the category. This feature is also helpful for controlling the permalink of your public archive pages, as the category slug is used to build the complete permalink. Keep in mind that slugs must be unique across all taxonomies in your blog, including your post categories and any other custom taxonomies you may have. So if you notice a number at the end of your slug that you didn't enter yourself, it means CataBlog is making the slug unique across all taxonomies.

Some other nice new features include new french localization for our fellow francophones and some CSS tweaks to better the Admin interface in Internet Explorer 9. Another new feature in this release automatically forwards an Admin user to the appropriate CataBlog Editor interface when a catablog item is loaded in the default WordPress editor.

great news! and a special thanks for the french! πŸ™‚
Though I don’t know what it is bugging with, since I made the update my wp-admin could not be accessed though my website was still running, including the catablog page. I waited about 10 minutes, nothing. As soon as I removed the catablog folder from my site ( yes, I did back-up), my wp-admin became accessible. So I put it on hold for now.

I am running the 3.3.1 WordPress version in french

    • Zach says:

Weird, how did you update? There aren’t any scripts or code run with this update, assuming you had 1.5 installed before. Did you do anything else?

      • Marie says:

Hi Zach, I re-installed catablog from the WP extension tab and it is doing the same thing. Maybe there is something to do with the french version I have? I had to remove the catablog folder again from the ftp.

        • Zach says:

You should download the latest version of the plugin, it does not need any special files for the french translation, it is now included in the plugin.

If you could try this, I would be appreciative. Try disabling other plugins and enabling the twentyten theme before activating catablog 1.6, just to rule out any other possible conflicts.

Otherwise I am at a lost, are you able to even see the admin login page? I would need access to the server to help more…hmmm….

Good luck and let me know if anything else helps.

Hi Zach, I got it : it’s the french translation that makes the bug. As soon as I remove the file catablog-fr_FR.mo I can access my admin.

          • Zach says:

So weird, I am going to need to look into this. Thanks so much for your help in diagnosing this problem.

  2. Jose says:

I have some problems with this upgrade too, specifically with the editor, I canΒ΄t see the editor TinyMCE, I was this editor already installed after that, and the text in the editor shows white.

    • Zach says:

Have you tried clearing your browsers cache and holding the shift button while refreshing the page a few times in your browser. That may fix your problem.

Could you also try disabling all other plugins and using the TwentyTen theme to rule out plugin and theme conflicts.

Browser, version and OS would also be helpful, Thanks!

  3. Love says:

Hi, it seems that the lightbox does not work now that I have installed the upgrade. When a picture is clicked, it does not bring up the lightbox but just the picture. Any suggestions?

  4. Love says:

    I figured it out! Thanks

  5. I too can not see the editor when I go into edit. Have done the update – have refreshed and have look at it in chrome, explorer7 and Firefox. Have the tab for Visual but nothing is there including description that had been put in and no editor.

Also – please see this page “http://www.tinviennaartplates.com/advertising-beer” not sure how to describe what has gone wrong here. Appreciate your help.

    • Zach says:

Looks like you solved your problem for the beer advertising page, most likely you had not closed an HTML tag.

    • Zach says:

About the editor in admin, you said you can see the Visual and HTML tabs, can you use the HTML editor? I get that the visual editor is not loading, what version of WordPress are you using? Do you have any other plugins enabled? can you try disabling them to see if their are any conflicts. Thanks

  6. I fixed the second part of my question – it could have been me – but there was some extra code in the template gallery – so my only issue now this the lack of an editor.

    Hope you can help…

    CL

  7. Ok – thanks for responding so quickly. It the problem is the cform plugin….

I will look for an alternative. Do really love this plugin. The new editor is a great addition. This site is not my prettiest but my client loves it and he actually get lots of traffic. Your plugin is what makes it work…

    Thank you…

    • Zach says:

Your welcome, you can tell your client that donations are always appreciated πŸ˜‰

But on a more serious note I am curious why cform would be causing this problem. I will have to look into it myself. Any clues, notes or thoughts on how to use cform like you did, so I might reproduce this bug. Cheers!

    • Zach says:

So I did a little research into the matter, and indeed the cforms plugin causes the content editor in CataBlog to break…this is upsetting. Perhaps I need to add a switch to turn off the visual editor just in case.

My belief is that however cforms adds the insert form button to the visual editor is causing CataBlog to break. I have tried other plugins with similar buttons, including NextGenGallery and Viper’s Video Quicktags and they do not break the CataBlog visual editor.

I also noticed a lot of PHP warnings after activating cforms, so I am weary to look further into CataBlog being compatible with this plugin because of poor WordPress integration.

  8. rickcpp says:

The WYSIWYG editor, fail with CKEditor Plugin.

    • Zach says:

Yes, I am not surprised. A few plugins cause the editor to fail. I am not sure why, eventually I would like to add an option to turn the WYSIWYG editor on and off for compatibility with other plugins.
